Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world’s largest shipbuilder, said on Tuesday that it won a $40 million order to supply 309 units of industrial robots for Vibrant Display Technology, a Chinese subsidiary of Taiwan-based liquefied crystal display (LCD) panel maker Chunghwa Picture Tubes.

Under the latest deal, Hyundai Heavy Industries will provide 309 units of specialty robots for LCD panel factory of VDT at Fuzhou, China by the second half of 2017. Those robots will transport the 6th-generation LCD mother glasses that each measures 1,850 mm by 1,500 mm. The deal accounts for 18 percent of the firm’s industrial robot division’s annual sales of 254 billion won ($220.7 million) last year. For this year, the Korean firm has set an annual sales target of 273 billion won from the industrial robot business, up 7.5 percent from last year.

Hyundai Heavy Industries is Korea’s sole industrial robot maker. It currently supplies 30 percent of the robots that transport LCD glass substrates in display foundries around the world. It developed the first robot in Korea that can transport 10.5th generation LCD glasses (3,370 mm x 2,940 mm) March last year.
