CJ CheilJedang Corp., the food manufacturing unit of CJ group that started its edible insect business this year, decided to focus on ingredient and farming technology first before start producing food products made from insects.

CJ CheilJadang has recently embarked on research to secure technology to mass produce edible warms, the company and the food industry said on Sunday. Instead of jumping into manufacturing of food using insects as other food making rivals such as Daesang Corp. and Nongshim Co. are doing, the company concluded that it should first focus on securing technology to breed and mass produce the ingredients to have a competitive edge in the market. It is expected to start manufacturing and selling food using insects as ingredients as early as 2019.

“We decided to focus our capability on technology to breed edible insects on a large scale after concluding that the local edible insect farms would not be enough to provide a stable supply,” said Moon Byung-seok, head of food research and development institute at CJ CheilJedang.

The number of farms growing edible insects in Korea tripled to 724 as of 2015 from 265 in 2011, but most of them are small-sized farms.

The company also seemed to have found farming market as promising as the edible insect food market itself. “Most of the edible insects are being mass produced in farms in the South Asian countries. If we can mass produce high quality ingredients, we would be able to dominate the insect supplying market,” Moon added.

The company plans to apply edible insects to food supplements, snacks and food for patients and pets once the research is completed.
