Coway Co., South Korea’s leading water purifier rental company that got into hot water for hiding harmful substances found in its products for a year, announced that it will recall all relevant products and refund rental fees to relevant customers.

On Thursday, Coway disclosed to take all necessary measures to alleviate customer concerns. Nickel coating was found inside 87,000 ice-making water purifiers and it would cost Coway up to 100 billion won ($86.4 million) for damages. The company pledged to be responsible for any health problems related to its products.

Earlier this week, Coway came under fire after it was found that it had been aware of the harmful substance in three of its water purifier models but it had tried to hide the defect for a year. The company visited customers’ houses and fixed the faulty component without telling them about the harmful substances.

Coway will stop production of all three ice-making water purifier models and recall them regardless of when they were sold or installed. The three models are CHPI-380N/CPI-380N, CHPCI-430N, and CPSI-370N and they have been installed from April 2014 to Dec. 2015.

Coway estimates that the concerning products have raised 53.82 billion won in sales, which account for 2.33 percent of the company’s latest total sales. Coway plans to pay back rental fees to customers and also provide them with new products starting next Monday. Those that wish to cancel their contracts will not be subject to penalty payment, Coway said.
