Kolon Industries Inc., a chemical and fashion unit of Kolon Group, announced on Monday that it has made a breakthrough development of transparent polyimide (PI), which can replace glass for display substrates, after a decade-long research and development. The company plans to make capital investment to embark on mass production.

Polyimides are super-strong synthetic and flexible polymers that are resistant to even extreme heat. They often replace glass and steel in many industrial applications.

Display material imports could be significantly reduced if the product can replace glass substrates for display-making.

“PI is a super engineering plastic with its property staying unchanged at extremely low temperature of minus 296 degrees Celsius and high temperature of 400 degrees Celsius,” said an official of Kolon Industries. “When the material is made in the form of film, it can be flexible like paper,” he explained. “We are ready to start mass-production and the capital investment would be decided upon studying the market demand,” he added.

With its heat resistance and flexibility, the material can be used in substrates of flexible displays that can be folded and rolled. “Unlike colored flexible displays used so far, transparent material is necessary for next-generation products, which indicates that the development this time is significant,” said the official. Experts believe that the material could bring about landscape change in the display and wearable market.

The industry expects that the nation can replace display glass substrates that are entirely imported from majors like U.S.-based Corning Inc. and Japan-based Asahi Glass Co.
