South Koreans sleep the least across Asia and Pacific Rim, according to a survey by AIA Group.

Koreans slept 6.3 hours a day on average, falling below the 6.9-hour average for people in Asia and Pacific, the multinational insurer found in its latest survey of 10,316 sample adults across 15 countries in the region.

Their ideal sleep hours of 7.5, also fell below the regional average of 7.9 hours.

More than half - or 53 percent - of Korean respondents believed their children were not getting enough sleep. Internet use and overwork from after-school tutorial classes were the biggest reasons for keeping them awake longer than necessary.

Korea scored 61 points out of a possible 100 in the overall 2016 Healthy Living Index, placing the country at 9th among 15 countries in the study that looked at sleep, weight, eating habits and stress levels. Korea moved up five notches from three years ago when it ranked 14th with a score of 57 points.

It however remained below the regional average of 64 points. China topped the survey with 72 points, while Hong Kong came in last with 57 points.

Koreans’ stress level stood at alarming 6.6 points, higher than the 15 Asia Pacific countries’ average of 6.2 points. A majority of Koreans - 81 percent - were most stressed out by their financial state, followed by work (80 percent), social activities (67 percent), and health (66 percent). On health issues, 71 percent were fearful of getting cancer.

The survey polled 10,316 adults aged 18 and over - 751 Koreans - across 15 countries on the Pacific Rim, including China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia and more.
