South Korean financial institutions are now able to sell KOSPI-based futures directly to investors in the United States without involving overseas brokerage houses.

The Korea Exchange (KRX) said on Tuesday it has completed all the necessary requirements to support the transaction, allowing Korean member companies of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the National Futures Association (NFA) to market their futures products directly to investors in the U.S.

As a result, 15 Korean stock brokers and futures houses including Daishin Securities, Samsung Futures and Samsung Securities registered with the NFA are eligible to promote and sell KOSPI 200-based futures products to U.S. investor without going through overseas brokers. In the past, Korean financial institutions were able to sell futures products to American investors only through brokers registered with the CFTC.

A KRX official said more foreigners will participate in the local futures market as multiple U.S. investors have already shown interest in transactions through Korean member companies, adding it will offer a good opportunity to raise the international status of Korea’s derivatives market.
