Overwatch, a new competitive first-person shooter game released by Blizzard Entertainment Inc., has taken over the top spot in South Korea’s online personal computer (PC) game ranking that had been long held by League of Legends, a real-time online strategy game created by Riot Games Inc.

According to game research agency Gametrics on Sunday, Overwatch was the most popular game played by gamers at 8,000 nationwide PC rooms - or Internet cafes with online game facilities. The shooting game accounted for 29.36 percent share out of all games played at PC rooms as of Saturday, dethroning League of Legends (29.17 percent) that had been in first place for 203 consecutive weeks. Overwatch clinched the top spot in just 26 days after its first release in Korea on May 24.

Overwatch is a multiplayer first-person shooting game developed by Blizzard Entertainment, an American game publisher well known for a number of real-time strategy games such as StarCraft and Warcraft. An unnamed official from Blizzard Entertainment said that gamers would normally think that a shooting game should be played alone but Overwatch is different in that strategic team play is essential as if they are playing a sports game.

Overwatch has also gained attraction in other countries. According to Blizzard Entertainment, more than 10 million people worldwide have played the game with game time exceeding 119 million hours. Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla Motors Inc., is also a big fan of the game. He recently recommended Overwatch to his followers on Twitter who like “ultrafast team first-person shooter (FPS) action.”
