KEPCO Engineering & Construction Company Inc (KEPCO E&C), a subsidiary of state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. will be in charge of pre-planning an automated nuclear power project in Saudi Arabia that another state-run Korea Atomic Research Institute (KAERI) won for $130 million in September last year.

The Kepco unit landed 63.9 billion won ($55 million) for pre-project planning stage, running safety and economic feasibility test on the nuclear power plant. KAERI signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s the King Abdullah City for Atomic & Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE) to cooperate on designing and building reactors in September last year. KEPCO E&C is participating in the project as a subcontractor providing a design evaluation service to ensure nuclear safety.

The new order came at a time when the nuclear power plant is under the renewed spotlight as countries around the world are obliged to cut back in greenhouse gas emissions upon the Paris Agreement on climate change, the company said.

“The company further upgraded its business portfolio on nuclear power plant through the mid-sized nuclear power plant project in Saudi Arabia following the 1,400-megawatt nuclear power plant deal in the United Arab Emirates and nuclear research reactor project in Jordan,” said an unnamed KEPCO E&C official.
