LS Cable & System Ltd. (LS C&S), South Korea’s leading cable manufacturer, said it received approval from the Canadian Standards Association (CSA International) for its newly-developed high-performance submarine cable that can withstand extreme cold of -70 degrees Celsius (-94 degrees Fahrenheit).

CSA International is a provider of product testing and certification for electrical, mechanical and various other products. Billions of products worldwide that have been proven safety and quality carry CSA certification marks.

According to the company on Tuesday, the CSA certified cable of LS C&S will be installed to transmit communication signals and electricity for icebreakers or offshore drilling ships in the polar regions. The cable is highly durable as it can withstand -70 degrees Celsius, the lowest temperature that conventional cables can ever tolerate, and ensures a stable supply of power under any shocks.

Demand for cables that can withstand coldness is on the steady rise as global warming and oil drilling development has prompted active polar explorations and resource developments in the regions. “We expect the demand for cables that can survive in extreme weather conditions would rise as a number of polar development projects are set to kick off,” said Kim Dong-wook who leads technology development department of the company. The company also pushes for the development of a variety of cables such as extra-high voltage, submarine or superconducting cables to supply to environmentally-friendly, mining, or construction businesses.
