Optis Co., a Korean manufacturer of computer peripheral devices, has filed for court receivership to avoid bankruptcy from excessive debt it incurred to acquire smartphone maker Pantech, Seoul Central District Court said on Wednesday.

The optical disc drive (ODD) maker formed a consortium with its Korean partner Solid Inc. last year to take over cash-strapped Pantech. Optis is now the second largest shareholder with a 4 percent stake in Pantech, while Solid controls 96 percent.

Optis has expanded its business aggressively through business acquisitions. It took over Sephil, Samsung Electronics’ ODD making unit in the Philippines in 2012 and acquired a 49.9 percent stake in Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) in 2014. But its top-line shrank dramatically as demand for ODD waned due to the rise of mobile memory cards and its once cash cow business TSST filed for court receivership recently.

“The share owned by Optis is worth a mere 2 billion won and the actual management control of Pantech is in hands of Solid. Therefore, the court receivership will have little impact on Pantech’s new product launch,” said a Pantech official.

Pantech is due to begin commercial production of a new smartphone model known as the IM-100 at the end of next month, according to industry observers.
