South Korea’s tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. is reportedly readying counter-suit after its Chinese counterpart Huawei Technologies Co. announced it was pursuing lawsuits against the Korean company for infringing on 11 of its patents on cellular networks and software.

Samsung Electronics, which ranks first in global smartphone sales and trails the Chinese company in network equipment category, is expected to take legal action in July, according to industry sources on Friday.

“It usually takes about two months to submit a petition to a U.S. court after reviewing a petition submitted by the other party,” said an official of the industry.

Samsung does not plan to challenge Huawei in a Chinese court as it would only help publicity of the company on its home turf. Taking it to a Korean court is also meaningless as Huawei takes up flimsy share in the Korean smartphone market, the source said.

Samsung would be concentrating on Huawei’s infringement on its patented technologies, and it won’t be difficult as the company commands over 100,000 patents on technology, the source said.

Ahn Seong-ho, head of Samsung’s intellectual property division, was first to respond to the news on the following day, indicating the department would lead the counterattack.

Out-of-court deal through cross-licensing arrangement is also possible as Huawei said it wanted to settle the matter through negotiation with Samsung. The company struck a cross-licensing deal with Ericsson through the same way.
