South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. became the Australia’s top-selling car brand in April for the first time after it entered the market in 1986.

Hyundai Motor sold 6,324 units in April alone, beating the Japanese Toyota Motor Corp. with 6,035 units, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries in Australia on Friday.

Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp. ranked third with 4,062 units, followed by Australia’s GM Holden Ltd. with 3,514 and Germany’s Volkswagen AG with 3,068. Kia Motors Corp. came at seventh by selling 2,011 cars.

Over the first four months of this year, Hyundai sold 22,368 units in total, about 2,000 fewer than Toyota. However, considering that Toyota’s sales of sedans were cut by 15.7 percent on year, it is likely that Hyundai would grab the number one spot in terms of annual sales volume.

The best-selling models of Hyundai are the i30 and the Accent. It sold 4,143 units of the i30 in April, up 80.3 percent from the same period last year, and the cumulative sales volume of the i30 from January to April this year surged 46.9 percent on year to 12,654. The Hyundai i30 became the best selling model in April, beating 2,959 of Toyota’s Corolla. Sales of the compact car Accent also soared 177.7 percent to 1,555 units on year.
