Haevichi Hotels & Resorts Co., hospitality unit of Korea’s automobile conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group, took over Westin Resort Guam for $125 million in the biggest real estate deal in the island over the last decade together with real estate private equity fund (PEF) Pioneer Holdings run by IGIS Asset Management Co.

It is the first overseas accommodation buyout for Haevichi Hotels & Resorts and the first Guam resort compound to fall under Korean ownership.

The 432-room Westin Resort Guam, a beachfront 4.5-star located in Tumon beach is favored by Asian tourists as it is in walking distance with the entertainment district and duty free shop. The hotel will continue to be managed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc.

Investing in a hotel in Guam is deemed profitable as it remains a popular vacation destination for Japanese and Korean tourists. Korean visitors to the island rose 26 percent on average over the last five years.

The investment suggests the conglomerate’s keenness in hotel business. Hyundai Motor previously announced a plan to build a six-star hotel on the southern Seoul compound that used to house headquarters of Korea Electric Power Corp. it bought from the utility company to build its new headquarters.
