Doenjang (fermented soybean paste), a Korean traditional staple that goes into various Korean dishes, has been scientifically proven to strengthen the immune system, CJ Cheil Jedang said on Wednesday citing a research paper from empirical and clinical tests published in the International Journal of Veterinary Science.

There has been ongoing research on benefits of Doenjang, but most of them focused on specific strains of the fermented food. The company said that it holds a great significance that the food itself proves health benefits. The company expects it would serve as an opportunity to promote Korean traditional fermented paste.

The company conducted the experiment by providing Doenjang powder to mice. It found that the mice consuming Doenjang power showed a significant improvement in humoral immunity, cellular immunity and pathogenic virus immunity compared to a control group. In particular, they activated more natural killer (NK) cells that target and kill aberrant cells such as virally infected and tumorigenic cells. Therefore, it has been proven that Doenjang boosts the immune system and reduces the likelihood to contract influenza or an atopic dermatitis, the company claimed.

“It will be a great opportunity for us to promote Doenjang in the world. We will keep up with studies on the health benefits of Doenjang,” said Shin, Hye-won, a chief researcher on fermented food at CJ Cheil Jedang.
