A first spinoff from Samsung Electronics Co. will roll out its innovative watch straps that will allow smartwatch users to have phone conversation upon touch of a finger to an ear late this year.

Innomdle Lab Co. that was initially incubated by Samsung Electronics’ C-Lab will begin commercial production of a smartwatch strap that transmits audio through a finger as early as in October, according to sources on Monday.

The startup attracted investment from Samsung Venture Investment Corp., one of its seed investors, as well as Chinese investors and DT Capital.

The smartwatch strap relays audio signals through the wrist and fingers to a user’s eardrum. The user can hear the voice discreetly by placing his or her finger on the ear, and despite background noise from places like a subway, a concert hall and a stadium, the user should hear clear voice, the company claims.

The watch strap syncs with a smartphone via Bluetooth and supports Android and iOS devices. The company will separately manufacture a strap for the Apple Watch because the Apple Watch has a unique structure.

“The idea was first developed after my acquaintance told me he felt embarrassed about the dialog he had via his smart watch being heard by others around him,” said the company’s CEO Choi Hyun-chul.

Choi, who once worked at Samsung Electronics’ DMC Research Center, won the best award in a C-Lab competition in 2014. He later set up his own company and recently developed a commercial prototype of the product.
