이미지 확대 China’s leading smartphone manufacturer Huawei Technologies Co. said on Wednesday that it was challenging its bigger South Korean rival Samsung Electronics in U.S. and Chinese courts for unlicensed use of its patented smartphone technology.
In the petition the Chinese company submitted to a district court in San Francisco, California, the company claimed that the Korean company infringed 11 patents in relation to fourth-generation (4G) mobile communications technology. The Chinese company also sued the Korean tech giant for patent violation in a court in Shenzhen, the southern Chinese city where the company is headquartered in. The Chinese company said it was seeking damages without disclosing the figures.
The case would serve as a major reversal of roles as Chinese companies had usually been accused of pirating technologies of more mature counterparts. Experts believe the Chinese company was waging court battles to appear more formidable against Samsung.
Samsung said it would take counter legal action against Huawei. Samsung’s fortunes in China in recent years have been sagging due to fast rise of Chinese makers. Once the first runner, Samsung phones now are sixth in terms of sales in the Chinese market. Global-wide, Samsung is the largest smartphone maker, followed by Apple and Huawei.
