Korean dividend payouts to foreigners up 23% after ’15 FY settlement

South Korean companies listed on the main Korea Composite Stock Price Index (Kospi) bourse and the secondary Korea Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (Kosdaq) bourse paid foreign shareholders a total of 7.39 trillion won ($6.3 billion) in dividends this year after settlements in December, up 22.5 percent from last year.

According to Korea Securities Depository on Thursday, foreigners received a total of 7.27 trillion won in dividends from the main Kospi market this year, up 1.37 trillion won, or 23.1 percent, from a year ago. Samsung Electronics Co. paid the largest amount of dividends worth 1.8 trillion won to foreigners. Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) paid 623.2 billion won, up 574.5 percent, followed by Hyundai Motor Co. with payout of 426 billion won.

Kosdaq investors earned less. Dividends to non-Korean nationals from Kosdaq members totaled 119 billion won, down 10.7 billion won, or 8.2 percent, from a year earlier. Among Kosdaq-listed companies, GS Home Shopping Inc. paid out the largest amount of dividends worth 12 billion won to foreigners, followed by Dongsuh with 7.1 billion won and Korea Ratings Corp. with 5.8 billion won.

By country, foreign shareholders from the U.S. took home 3.09 trillion won in dividends from Korea, or 42 percent of total payouts. British investors earned 612.6 billion won and those from Luxembourg 450.6 billion won.
