South Korean President Park Geun-hye named Lee Won-jong, chairman of the presidential committee on regional development as her new chief of staff in a reshuffle of the presidential staff with less than two years left in the president’s five-year tenure following the ruling party’s crushing defeat in April 13 general election.

Lee, 74 would be replacing Lee Byung-kee who handed in his resignation to take responsibility over the April vote outcome that cost the ruling party both the majority and first rank position in the new legislative.

Lee, a veteran bureaucrat, served as a mayor in Seoul and three-term governor of North Chungcheong Province.

“Lee with rich experience in governance is eligible to assist the president and help to enhance communication with the people and promote balanced growth, said presidential spokesman Kim Sung-woo.

Ahn Chong-bum, senior secretary for economic affairs, changed title as the president’s top policy aide advising her on overall national affairs. Saenuri Party lawmaker Kang Seog-hoon who advised on the economy during transition period after Park was elected in late 2012 was named as her new senior secretary for economic affairs.

Kang graduated from Seoul National University and earned his doctoral degree on economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
