The cumulative number of customers who have signed contracts to purchase Hyundai Motor Co.’s luxury sedan Genesis EQ900 (known as G90 overseas) has topped 27,000 units in just six months after its launch in South Korea, above its total annual sales target of 20,000 units this year, according to Hyundai Motor on Sunday.

The EQ900, which was rolled out as the first model of the Korean carmaker’s independent premium brand, Genesis, in the local market late last year, has been so highly sought after that its customers have to wait about two months. More than 10,000 units have been handed over to consumers since its shipping started in December 2015, and another 16,000 units are waiting to be delivered. To meet such strong demand, the company and its labor union in January agreed on bumping up the yearly production of the EQ900 to 32,000 units.

Of 11,634 contracts, only 361 have been cancelled between January and April this year. The cancellation rate is a mere 3.1 percent, much lower than the industry average of 7~8 percent.

The company believes that such popularity is partly attributed to the premium service it provides to the EQ900 buyers. The best-received service is Private Delivery that a designated driver delivers a new car to the customer at an appointed time and place, accompanied by a Car Master offering detailed explanation about the car.

The EQ900 is scheduled to hit the global market under the name of G90 in the latter half. Hyundai Motor plans to launch total six models under the standalone Genesis brand by 2020.
