South Korea’s tech behemoth Samsung Electronics Co. ranked first in smartphone sales in 14 among 15 emerging countries in the first quarter of this year, according to U.S.-based market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) on Sunday.

SA selects 15 countries with higher market shares in the smartphone market every quarter and releases their sales and market shares.

The 15 countries include Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt, Nigeria, Australia, Rumania and Turkey. The smartphone market of the 15 countries is valued at about 45 million units, accounting for 14 percent of the global market.

The tech giant ranked first in sales in 14 among 15 countries except the Philippines with particularly higher market shares in Egypt with 55 percent, Rumania with 42 percent and Turkey with 39 percent.

In the Philippines, its local manufacturer Cherry Mobile beat Samsung Electronics to take first place, which attracted attention. The Indonesian smartphone market was the largest with large population. It sold 9.7 million units of smartphones in the first quarter, more than doubling 4.3 million units of Nigeria.

In contrast, its rival Apple Inc. fared ill in the emerging markets in the first quarter. The company had double-digit market shares only in six countries - Australia with 26 percent, the Netherlands with 19 percent, Poland with 10 percent, Portugal with 10 percent, Rumania with 11 percent and Turkey with 10 percent and the company lagged behind China’s Huawei in other countries. As recently as last year, the company took first place in sales in the Australian market but it yielded the top position to Samsung Electronics in the first quarter.
