South Korea’s consumer price index rose more than 1 percent on year for a third consecutive month, government data showed.

According to data released by Statistics Korea on Tuesday, the country’s consumer price index gained 1.0 percent last month from the same month in the previous year. The index had remained below 1 percent for 11 consecutive months since December 2014, and then it picked up by more than 1 percent in November and December last year. In January, the gain in consumer prices slowed to 0.8 percent, but rebounded to the 1 percent range from February and onwards, likely suggesting that the country’s inflation might have escaped from the zero percent range. Still it is lower than the Bank of Korea’s annual inflation target set at 2 percent.

The increase in the April reading was led by a hike in fresh food like vegetables and fruits. The fresh food index that includes 51 items with the highest price fluctuations depending on weather conditions increased 9.6 percent in April from a year earlier. The index in both February and March had also gained 9.7 percent on-year. In particular, vegetable prices have shot up after the unexpected heavy snow and the cold wave that hit the country in January.

Core CPI excluding volatile energy and food prices grew 1.9 percent on-year in April.
