Samsung Electronics Co. is unlikely to resume the production of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display TVs.

Kim Hyun-seok, president of visual display division (VD) at Samsung Electronics Co., dismissed ongoing rumors that South Korea’s tech giant would resume its large-sized OLED (OLED) TV business. At a press conference held at Samsung Digital City in Suwon, Gyeonggi, on Wednesday, Kim said that it is difficult to conclude that OLED business is a path the company should follow.

“We believe that OLED panel technology could become a core technology among small-sized applications, but it is hard to assume that it would become a mainstay for large applications,” Kim said.

The Samsung president noted that there is a high possibility that new, emerging technologies would take over present technologies in one to two years, and it is difficult to promise at this moment that Samsung Electronics would launch large-sized OLEDs after two to three years.

Kim told reporters that the company has not yet solved the issue that led Samsung Electronics to halt its OLED TV business in 2013.

“There are no companies at this moment that are serious about producing large-sized OLED panels or looking into (the technology) except for one company,” said Kim. “It seems the industry in general isn’t yet sure (about producing large-sized OLED).” LG Display Co. is the only company that has been actively promoting OLED display technology.

When it comes to the second-generation quantum dot technology applied to Samsung Electronics’ SUHD TVs launched in March, Kim said that related technology is advancing at a rapid speed so that it can be called as a major “progress” and “evolution.”
