Driven by sales of new models, sales of Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. recovered in China last month after falling since last December.

According to multiple sources from the auto industry on Wednesday, combined sales of Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors in China reached 146,378 units in April, up 0.1 percent from a year ago. It is the first time in four months that the two automakers’ monthly sales expanded year-over-year.

Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors have been struggling in China from low sales in the first three months of this year. In January, their combined sales declined 21.9 percent on-year to reach 124,495 units while 21.2 percent to 94,235 units in February, and 6.8 percent to 150,591 in March. Sales, however, started to rebound with the launch of Hyundai’s new Avante compact vehicle - locally sold as Langdong - and Kia’s new-generation Sportage sport utility vehicle (SUV) KX5.

Buoyed by sales of Langdong that hit 14,665 units, Hyundai Motor’s total sales of compact vehicles in China jumped 12.7 percent on-year to 35,658 units in April.

Growing popularity of Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors’ SUVs including the new Sportage and Tucson also boosted overall sales. Their combined SUV sales in China reached 49,801 units in April, up 45.2 percent from a year earlier. Sales of the Hyundai new Tucson, in particular, reached 11,150 units in China last month on the rising popularity of the Korean drama “Descendants of the Sun.” The Tucson appeared in the drama multiple times as part of product placement advertisement.
