South Korea’s Fortis Inc., a set top box manufacturer, seeks to bolster its e-commerce business in China with its recent acquisition of Online Cargo Co., an international delivery service providing company.

The tech-heavy Kosdaq-listed company said on Wednesday that it bought a 40 percent stake in the logistics company at 10.9 billion won ($9.44 million). It plans to buy the stakes with cash reserves and through convertible bond (CB) issuance. After the deal is closed, it will be the biggest stakeholder of the logistics company.

Online Cargo, a former subsidiary of Tong Yang Moolsan Co., has been providing overseas logistics services since its foundation in 1981. It was spun off from Tong Yang Moolsan in 2014. Its customers include domestic conglomerates and small- and medium- sized enterprises.

The merger of the e-commerce company and the logistics company is expected to create great synergy. An official at Fortis said Online Cargo’s business knowhow in the logistics business should boost Fortis’ competitiveness.

The digital broadcast receiver maker made a foray into the e-commerce business by acquiring SMT, an e-commerce company, last year after it joined the Korean bourse. It has been pushing ahead with logistics business in China in cooperation with 24 companies and established a local branch in Beijing last year.

Lee Chan-jin, founder of Hancom Inc., an office suite developer, is heading Fortis Inc. Lee said the company aims to swing to the black in operating profit on sales of 200 billion won this year.
