The South Korean government is expected to cut city gas prices in May as part of a move to reflect the falling price of natural gas amid low international oil prices. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on Friday, the country’s city gas prices based on Seoul’s retail charge will be lowered by an average of 5.6 percent from the current rate starting Sunday.

The fall in the prices is expected to bring down the monthly average city gas bill of 16.6 million households by 1,415 won ($1.2) to 32,427 won. The latest cut in prices comes after two previous ones this year. The ministry lowered city gas prices by 9 percent in January and 9.5 percent in March. Overall, city gas prices have been cut by 22.1 percent so far this year compared to the end of last year.

Meanwhile, the ministry also said that heating prices rated by the Korea District Heating Corp. will also be cut by an average of 4.58 percent. This would mean that the monthly heating bills per household will go down by an average of 2,400 won based on 85 square meter residential area.

According to the ministry, the changes in utility charges come after reflecting the fall in the price of natural gas amid low international oil prices. The government has been adjusting city gas prices by automatically linking and reflecting the price of raw materials. If raw materials price go up or down by 3 percent from the current price, the government reflects the change to city gas prices every two months.
