North Korea will convene a ruling party congress in Pyongyang on May 6 for the first time in 36 years, Pyongyang’s central radio officially announced on Wednesday.
Pyongyang’s state-run central radio reported the country’s Political Bureau of the Central Committee has decided to hold the seventh Workers’ Party convention on May 6, which is the top decision-making body in the country.
It will be the country’s first party congress since North Korean leader Kim Jong-un took power in late 2011 and the last time the North convened the party congress was in October 1980, 36 years ago.
The party congress will be closely watched for any new policies. Experts say the North Korean leader is expected to use the congress to cement his leadership and to formally adopt his policy to pursue economic development and nuclear weapons capability at the same time.
