South Korea’s largest web portal operator Naver Corp. has joined up with web-based car-sharing company to launch connected car services allowing drivers Internet access with devices inside and outside a motor vehicle.

The Internet giant Wednesday said it inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) deal with Green Car to jointly develop connected car platforms. Cars rented out by Green Car would be fitted with platforms providing navigation, map, music, and search services of Naver. The Internet company plans to expand the car connectivity service to offer customized services in the longer run.

Naver last year announced the so-called BLUE project, pledging 100 billion won ($88.4 million) over the next five years in the hardware areas of robotics, mobility and smart home.

Song Chang Hyun, chief technology officer (CTO) of Naver, said the company aims to contribute to more convenient lifestyle through car connectivity. Green Car CEO Lee Yong-ho said the ultimate aim is to provide user-friendly environment in a car through free Internet access and big data-based tailored services.

Connected car platform is a technology to make the vehicle a smartphone-like source and medium for information, communication, and entertainment. It could pave the way for new application sectors through the pool of information shared by drivers.
