Indonesia`s sugar production is expected to reach 2.5 million tonnes in 2016, below an earlier target of 2.9 million metric tons, an agriculture ministry official said, as El Nino related weather anomalies curbed output.
"Production is down a little," Gamal Nasir, director general of estate crops said when asked about impacts from El Nino on sugar output this year.
Nasir added that the milling season has started in some parts of Java, with yields reaching 8.2 percent compared to 2015 full-year average yields of 8.9 percent. Yields refers to the amount of sugar produced per tonne of sugarcane.
Indonesia currently has 1 million tonnes of white sugar stocks, Nasir said.
