South Korea has kicked off a trial run for its fourth-generation synchrotron accelerator, making it a third-world country with the equipment behind the United States and Japan.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said on Monday the fourth-generation synchrotron accelerator was completed and entered into a trial run. The gigantic experimental system exists to accelerate electrons to extremely high energy and resulting electromagnetic radiation is used for the observation of the structure of phenomenon of materials.

The ministry began the construction of the 429.8 billion won ($376.5 million) synchrotron accelerator together with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in April 2011 and completed it late last year.

Testing of individual components was conducted from last October and the government approved the use of the radiation-emitting system last Tuesday. The trial run of the electron gun began last Thursday and a 6MV radiation beam was successfully attained.

This is equivalent to the energy provided by 4 million 1.5V batteries, the strongest one in Korea. The beam is accelerated to 10GV to produce an X-ray free electron laser beam.
