OCI Solar Power LLC, U.S. subsidiary of South Korea’s chemicals and energy company OCI Co., joined with a local Mexican government to create a solar farm with an annual photovoltaic power capacity of 13.6-megawatt (MW) in Moctezuma, Chihuahua.

According to the company last Saturday, OCI Solar Power had a solar panel installation ceremony last Friday (local time) participated by its CEO Yoon Seok-hwan, Chihuahua Governor César Horacio Duarte Jáquez and other stakeholders to mark the construction of the solar farm dubbed Los Santos I. The project is OCI Solar Power’s first project in Mexico and also the country’s first large private solar park designed to supply energy to private business operators and consumers including Germany-based cable manufacturer Leoni Cables S.A. de C.V. and Universidad La Salle Chihuahua (ULSA). The power supply is estimated to be sufficient to reduce carbon dioxide emission by 1,915 tons a year. OCI secured more than 70 percent of the funding for the construction from the United States. San Antonio, Texas-based OCI Solar Power runs and is engaged in the 450MW Alamo project, the largest utility-scale solar field in Texas, since 2012.

It ventured into the Chinese market last year, recently completing construction of 2.5MW solar plant in Jiaxing City in Zhejiang Province. OCI also eyes solar markets in India and Africa.
