LG Display Co., South Korea’s leading display panel maker, said on Wednesday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding to build a new display module assembly plant in Hai Phong City, Vietnam.

The new plant to be initially capitalized at $100 million aims to start production in the second half of 2017 after construction which will begin in the first half of this year.

LG Display is currently running display module assembly lines in Paju and Gumi in Korea, and Guangzhou, Yantai and Nanjing in China, and Wrocław in Poland. The latest investment plan reflects the company’s need to further increase its assembly capability.

In particular, Hai Phong City provides a great geographical advantage as it is located in the northern part of Vietnam, making it easier to ship display modules to China where LG Display customers are clustered. The availability of a young and talented workforce with reasonable wages in this region is another advantage.
