Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea’s largest tech giant, picked fast-charging battery technology, functional materials for drones and robots and artificial intelligence as key future technologies that it will focus to research and develop this year. The company has announced focal research and development areas every year since 2013, hinting the latest technology trends that are poised to change human lives.

The South Korean conglomerate has launched a 1.5-trillion-won funding project over the course of a decade in August 2013, to contribute to the country’s pursuit of future growth momentum. So far it supported total 231 projects in various sectors, including IoT security as well as energy storage and harvesting in 2014 and smart living sensor materials and system software in 2015.

This year’s funding goes to projects under the theme of fast-charging battery technology, advanced functional materials for drones and robots and artificial intelligence including machine learning, according to the company on Thursday. The rising number of products that need to be powered to operate, such as electric vehicles, fueled much interest in quicker charging technology.

The funding is up for grabs for those who submit project proposals under the themes via the website: http://www.samsungftf.com/main/main/openMain.do, from Apr. 25 to May 6.

The electronics giant also chose 33 projects in other key sectors - basic science, materials technology and ICT - to support for the first half this year Thursday. Unlike the future technology sector, the applicants can pick their own themes for their projects that Samsung receives applications twice a year.
