The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Thursday that it will offer free high-speed Wi-Fi service at all subway lines in the capital city starting next year. The city government plans to receive applications from operators wishing to establish communications network for the new service to be provided from lines 1 to 9. The application period will begin on Apr. 11 for 40 days.
The city government’s latest project is aimed at improving the overall public Wi-Fi service offered at subway stations by increasing the current data transmission speed of 10 megabits per second (Mbps) to between 100 and 300 Mbps.
According to the city government, any operator is eligible to participate in the application process if it is able to provide Wi-Fi service by establishing wire and wireless communications systems inside Seoul’s 307 subway stations from Line No. 1 to 9 and about 3,784 subway trains. After selecting an operator, the city government is pushing for a timeline of offering the new high-speed Wi-Fi service first at Line No. 4 and 8 from January next year. All subway stations will be equipped with the speedy network by the end of next year.
Meanwhile, the project will be carried out in the form of which the operator secures funds to build, own and operate the public facility. The operator is expected to manage an individually-developed profit model.
