Jumping on the smart car bandwagon, Hyundai Motor Group revealed its ambitious connected car project with an aim to develop so-called “hyper-connected and intelligent car” that would function as a “high-performing computer.”

The world’s fifth largest auto group, which is comprised of Hyundai Motor Co. and its sister company Kia Motors Corp., on Tuesday announced its roadmap for a smart car running based on artificial intelligent (AI) technology. According to South Korea’s auto giant, it will develop a car that will be connected to other cars, offices and cities, enabling safer and smarter driving, easier maintenance and cleaner air. For the project, Hyundai will invest in four key technologies: smart remote maintenance services, autonomous driving, smart traffic and a mobility hub of connectivity, it said in a statement.

The smart remote maintenance service would allow remote access to the car to diagnose and fix problems in real time, in case of any emergency.

The autonomous driving is to assure the utmost safety by connecting the car to all things, including other cars nearby, roads and other infrastructure to share intelligent information to prevent accidents.

The smart traffic would provide the optimal route to the driver based on the analysis of traffic and road conditions. This technology is expected to help minimize social costs incurred time- and energy-wise, and reduce environmental pollution.

Lastly, the mobile hub of connectivity is to allow the vehicle to be the medium between the car, other things and intelligent information.

An official at the company said Hyundai Motor will set a new paradigm in the auto industry by leading a connected car technology that could open a new era of so-called “Car to Life.”
