South Korea’s LS Industrial Systems Co. (LSIS) said Monday that its power conversion system (PCS) for an 1-megawatt (MW) energy storage system (ESS) was certified in the United states, a move that is expected to accelerate the company’s forays into the U.S. market.

The company said its PCS was certified by UL, a procedure that is necessary for companies to market their electrical solutions in the U.S.

PCS is a main component of an ESS that converts battery power from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), allowing stable power supply in the ESS. The LSIS’s PCS ensures the 1MW ESS to deliver power to end users without much degradation in its power quality.

The South Korean electric component maker will put out efforts to grab a pie of the rapidly growing U.S. ESS market in the wake of the landmark Paris Conference of Parties (COP) 21 global climate agreement last year. Investment in ESS to promote the use of renewable energy and replace power grids by smart grids in the U.S. has grown exponentially, and the U.S. ESS market that is currently valued at $900 million is expected to reach $16 billion by 2024, according to the industry data. The PCS market, which LSIS is eyeing on, is forecast to grow from $275 million this year to $4.9 billion.

The South Korean company will go all out for the U.S. market by expanding the product lineups to outcompete global rivals, said Kim Won-il, the company’s head of the power grid business division.
