South Korean health authorities have confirmed the first case of a Korean patient being infected with the Zika virus, but they decided not to raise the alert level as the virus is less contagious.

Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Tuesday a 43-year-old man was tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus after traveling to Brazil on business on Feb. 17. He stayed for 22 days in the northeastern part of the Latin American country and returned home on Mar. 11.

The person showed no symptoms when he returned home but developed fever five days later and visited a hospital to treat fever in Gwangyang, Jeonnam last Friday. On the following day he suffered from muscle pain and rash, forcing him to visit the hospital again. The hospital reported his case to Gwangyang health authorities, which confirmed his infection with the virus on genetic testing.

The person told health authorities he got mosquito bites in Brazil. The incubation period for Zika is known to be between a few days and one week.

The CDC said that he receives further testing at Chonnam National University Hospital and is showing improvement in symptoms, adding it will check his wife in order to prevent any further infection.

CDC director Jung Ki-suk said in a press briefing that the person does not need to be isolated from other patients but he remains hospitalized considering it is the first confirmed case.

Health authorities also decided to maintain the alert level at the current “attention” status, as the virus is less contagious. The CDC director reassured the public that there has been no report of infections happening in daily life.
