South Korean prosecutors are investigating whether Audi Volkswagen Group has cheated emission tests with the cars compliant with the stricter Euro 6 carbon standards as it had done with its Euro 5 engines installed in its diesel models produced between 2009 and 2015. The local prosecutors seized Audi A1 and A3 Euro 6 compliant cars for further scrutiny.

The German auto group admitted last year that Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars have been fitted with special software that limits dangerous emission only during pollution testing. It denied the models sold after 2015 under the stricter emission standard contained defeat devices. Criminal and litigation actions against the German carmaker in Korea would mount if the imports of 1,200 models under Euro 6 standards are found to emit more pollutants than required.

On Friday, prosecutors confiscated 18 Euro 6 compliant vehicles of four models, including the Audi A1 and A3 and the Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI, from the warehouse in a port in Pyeongtaek, about 70 kilometers south of Seoul. The cars were sent for lab tests by state environmental authorities. The cars sold after January last year must emit 30 percent to 50 percent less carbon emissions than Euro 5 engines under the toughened regulations.

Local prosecutors have raided offices and homes of Audi Volkswagen officials last month and have been conducting comprehensive probe from shipping to retail sales.

The Korean environment ministry ordered recall of 125,000 cars upon discovering they emit carbons beyond permitted levels while driving. Volkswagen Korea maintained that no wrongdoing is possible with its Euro 6 compliant models.
