South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. (HHI) aspiring to become a robotic powerhouse said Thursday that it supplied rehabilitation robotics to Asan Medical Center, one of the biggest general hospitals run by Hyundai Heavy Industries, and begun trial tests on patients there.

The robotic device for therapeutic training for patients will be tested on its safety and efficacy. The heavy industries producer will upgrade the device based on the trial test for commercialization and sales at home and abroad. It has been developing robotic and automated medical devices after it was chosen as a corporate member of future growth industry promotion initiative that runs until May 2017 under auspice of the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning since late last year.

Shin Hyun-soo, HHI technology center head, noted the automated medical service market will likely grow to multibillion-dollar market by 2018 and added that the company’s ultimate goal is to export the devices.

Apart from the training robot to help patients regain ability to walk, HHI is also preparing trial tests for self-developed medical robots for transportation and surgical assistance. HHI has strengthened robotic lineup by adding medical robotics to industrial robots like car assembly and LCD transport robots.
