South Korean government’s new emblem is revealed Tuesday, which will be used uniformly for all government ministries and agencies.

A “taegeuk” mark, or yin-yang symbol, was revealed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) on Tuesday after a year-long effort to determine a new unified emblem.

The ministry said that the design features the national flag’s taegeuk symbol on a clean white background, with “The Government of the Republic of Korea” written in the font that reminds of the time when Hunminjeongeum - the original name of Korean alphabet, Hangeul - was first promulgated in 1446.

The new symbol will replace the previous government emblem, which used the rose of Sharon, the country’s national flower, as well as many other individual symbols used by different government ministries.

The cultural ministry said the unified emblem will save costs and lessen public confusion.
