Samsung Electronics Co. bets on medical devices for pets, according to the company`s executive.

Demand for medical devices for pets should rise along with the growing market for companion animals, Jun Dong-soo, head of health and medical equipment division at Samsung Electronics Co. and CEO of Samsung Medison, said in a meeting with journalists at the Korea International Medical & Hospital Equipment Show (KIMES 2016) held at COEX in Samsung-dong, Seoul on Thursday.

Samsung Electronics showcased the Samsung PT10V, a compact veterinary analyzer for the measurement of clinical chemistry parameters. It supports rapid and accurate in-house laboratory work to cover up to 13 key items including heartbeat and determines the measurement results within 10 minutes. The analyzer comes available with six test cartridges that combine common parameters at pet clinics. Results can be sent to a vet’s mobile devices.

“The market for animal diagnostic systems is not big but it will grow at a fast speed," Jun said, adding that market responses are positive over the launch of the PT10V. “Medical devices for humans are price regulated due to health insurance coverage, limiting their motivation to replace old products, but those for animal clinics have no determined price,” Jun further explained.

Samsung Electronics unveiled a line-up of new medical devices at the exhibition: Fixed digital X-ray (GC85A), mobile X-ray (GM60A), ultrasound system for abdomen, breast and musculoskeletal imaging (RS80A·HS70A) and ultrasound system for OB/GYN (WS80A).

Jun said the company will focus on its flagship ultrasound business and plans to secure safety and improve medical imaging technology.
