Condom sales have been soaring in South Korea amid the slowing economy that is believed to have led many couples to avoid or delay having babies.
According to local retail industry data on Thursday, the Korean condom market saw a sales jump last year, and condom sales remain on the upward trend this year. GS Retail, one of the major convenience store chain operators in Korea, said that condom sales at its convenience stores for the first two months of this year surged about 55 percent compared to the same period in 2013. The condom sales data was compiled on per store basis to offset sales expansion from stores newly opened.
Another local convenience store operator BGF Retail Co., the condom sales at its CU convenience stores have been on the rise since 2013. Condom sales at CU jumped from 100 in 2013 to 126 in 2014 and 141 in 2015. This year, the sales data dropped to 140, but condoms are still selling well at CU shops, the company said.
