South Korea’s SK Innovation Co. will ramp up lithium-ion battery production at its plant in Korea eight months after it expanded the plant’s output to meet growing demand for its electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

SK Innovation on Thursday announced that it is adding EV battery production lines at its Seosan plant in South Chungcheong Province, Korea to boost its production capacity to the level that would power up 40,000 EVs per year.

The Korean rechargeable battery provider previously doubled the plant’s capacity to power 30,000 EVs in July 2015. The company targets to complete the expansion before September this year.

SK Innovation has already secured EV battery orders worth more than seven years and it plans to fully operate the plant for 24 hours a day as soon as the expansion is completed, said Kim Hong-dae, head of SK Innovation’s battery and information electronic materials business.

Currently, the company is shipping EV batteries for Kia Motors’ Soul EV and Chinese automaker Beijing Automotive Industries Holdings’ electric cars EV200 and ES201. SK Innovation also won an order to supply battery cells for Mercedes-Benz’s next generation electric cars and was nominated for its outstanding partnership at Daimler AG’s Supplier Award event held on Feb. 25 this year in Germany.

SK Innovation expands a production line after it secures an order to maintain stable growth and improve profitability, said Lee Hang-soo, executive vice president of SK Innovation, adding the company plans to boost its research and development efforts to further advance its technology.
