Thanks to a wave of Chinese merchants increasingly looking for cheap but quality kids’ wear, Namdaemun Market, South Korea’ largest traditional wholesale market with around 10,000 stores selling diverse fashion items and everyday goods, and in particular, a must visit for children’s clothing, is recuperating after it has lost its vigor to rising popularity of the rival Dongdaemun Market.

Currently, over 1,000 stores spanning across a total of seven districts specialized for children’s attire, are up and running in Namdaemum market in central Seoul. Their biggest customers are Chinese who usually make purchases worth more than 10 million won ($8300) per person per visit. They often hire agents who translate, buy and even ship their purchases to China. The round-the-clock market attracts many Chinese buyers even at night time, accounting for nearly 80 percent of all night customers.

Chinese retailers cite “speedy transition between designs” for one of the main reasons they prefer the Korean children’s clothing. In particular, clothing stores at the market are responding promptly to fast changes in consumers’ demand by introducing new fashion designs at least once every two months at their stores. A 42-year-old Chinese male retailer praised the fast-changing trend of kid’s wear in Korea, adding China’s fashion industry is still falling behind the Korean counterpart in terms of designs.

With the recently abolished one-child policy in China, demand for children’s clothing made in Korea is expected to continue to increase, which could further help revive Namdaemun market, said the industry watchers.
