South Korea will ease requirements for issuing international trade visas D-9-1 to non-Korean individuals involved in trade activities starting Mar. 14, said the Ministry of Justice.
So far, this type of visa was provided only for foreigners who had at least $500,000 in trade record annually. Under the new guideline, the visa will be issued according to trade experience, duration of stays in Korea, record on academic studies and training course in Korea.
Guidelines on visa extension also have been revised. According to export achievements, hiring of Korean employees and tax record, permit will be prolonged six months to two years.
Under the eased regulations, the government expects the visa holders could be expanded to 1,000 by 2018 from current 50.
“We believe the new visa criteria could help boost exports of Korean products and jobs here,” said an official of the Justice Ministry.
The Ministry of Justice will assign trade expert training courses to 3 institutions - Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, Korea International Trade Association and Seoul Business Agency. Starting Mar. 14, they will accept applications for the course, which will be provided for free until this November. Overseas traders who complete the course are entitled to extra points in applying for the trade visas.
