Hyundai Steel Co. embarks on production from its steel mill in Mexico starting this month upon completion of its construction, according to the company Wednesday.

The plant, named Mexico Steel Service Center (SSC), will turn out cold-rolled steel plates used in vehicles primarily for its largest shareholder Kia Motors Corp.

The center built at a cost of $44 million is located in Monterrey, northeast Mexico and will immediately operate after finishing test trial this month. It will supply cold-rolled steel plates to make 400,000 vehicles for Kia a year.

Hyundai Steel absorbed sister company Hyundai Hysco and its offshore steel plants last year. Similar plants in Chongqing and Tianjin in China are under construction and slated for completion late this year or early next year.
