LG Innotek Co., an electronics parts manufacturer under South Korea’s LG Group, has developed a wireless battery management system (BMS), a move that will help enhance its dominance in the global market.

LG Innotek announced Sunday that it has successfully developed the wireless BMS, a crucial component in electric vehicles that monitors voltage, current, and temperature in real-time, optimizing battery performance and lifespan.

The industry forecasts a substantial growth in the wireless BMS market, estimating a jump from last year’s 9 billion won ($6.92 million) to 1.3 trillion won by 2028.

The standout feature of the wireless BMS lies in its capability to significantly reduce the weight of EVs. By eliminating cables connected to the wired BMS, vehicle weight can be reduced by 30 to 90 kilograms.

This removal also creates an additional 10 to 15 percent of free space for battery packs. Consequently, increasing battery capacity extends an EV’s driving range by up to 50 kilometers.

The company unveiled its commercially available product, the highest voltage 800V model. Higher voltage translates to reduced charging times.

LG Innotek also built the industry’s first simulation technology to conduct its own virtual verification of communication quality. The virtual validation results exhibited an alignment of over 95 percent when compared to the physical counterpart.

LG Innotek plans to showcase the wireless BMS at the Consumer Electronics Show 2024 in Las Vegas, before launching mass production.

The company aims to apply the technology gained in the development process to develop a wireless electric vehicle charging controller (EVCC).
