Hyundai Engineering Co., the plant engineering unit of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group, has recently signed an agreement with multiple entities for the establishment of an electrolysis-based hydrogen production base in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, the company said on Thursday.
The agreement was made with the provincial government, Boryeong City, Korea Midland Power, Techcross Water & Energy, and ISTE.
The project aims to build infrastructure capable of producing more than 1 ton of hydrogen per day in Boryeong. The focus is not only on production but also on establishing facilities for hydrogen storage and transportation.
The hydrogen to be produced at the new facility will be supplied to nearby hydrogen refueling stations, contributing to the activation of the hydrogen mobility ecosystem.
Hyundai Engineering will oversee the comprehensive design, procurement of electrolysis facilities, regulatory work, and construction for this project.
The plan involves initiating the basic design work early next year and commencing construction in the first half of 2025, with full-fledged clean hydrogen production scheduled to begin in 2026.
In August, Hyundai Engineering was selected in the state-led project to build the production base.
