Dongwon Group names StarKist CFO as new CEO

South Korean conglomerate Dongwon Group announced the appointment of Chief Financial Officer Choi Young-jo as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its U.S. subsidiary StarKist, the world’s largest supplier of canned and packaged tuna.

The newly appointed CEO graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in Business Administration and completed an MBA program at Manchester Business School in the United Kingdom, the company said on Friday. He also holds certified public accountant qualifications in both Korea and United States.

Choi joined StarKist as CFO last year after working at Deloitte and holding positions such as the head of internal audit and director of Asia financial planning at Tesco in Asia. He then served as the president and global CFO of SPC Group’s North America subsidiary.

“Amid uncertain business conditions caused by a slowdown in U.S. consumption, Choi, who possesses a deep understanding of the U.S. market and extensive experience in various business sectors, will lead the sustainable growth of StarKist through management efficiency,” said a Dongwon Group official.

StarKist, which became a key affiliate of Dongwon Group after its acquisition in 2008, quickly achieved profitability within six months and currently records annual revenue of 1 trillion won ($765 million).
