Kakao Corp.’s labor union said on Wednesday that the company’s management publicly demanded the cessation of its activities, making public the contents of a letter sent by the company on Tuesday in the name of CEO Hong Eun-taek.

Amid the current crisis at Kakao, seen as a rift in the leadership of the company, the union has requested participation in management reforms. To push this agenda forward, the union staged its first demonstration, coinciding with the 6th emergency management meeting chaired by Kakao Founder Kim Beom-su on Monday.

The company’s letter to the union stated that the union had not followed procedures, posting criticism of the company’s actions on the internal online bulletin board, occupying company lobbies, and conducting picket protests.

In the letter, the company prohibited the use of any facilities, equipment, or locations, whether online or offline, without prior consultation, while requiring the union to seek prior consultation for concerning offline union activities or online posts.

In response, the Kakao union criticized the company’s demand, saying that the requirement for prior consultation on all union activities is excessive and encroaches upon the autonomy of the union.

The union noted that under the Kakao collective agreement, consultation in advance is only required when using the company network to communicate with all employees collectively.

Highlighting that the company’s public demand to prohibit union activities like picketing has occurred for the first time since the union’s establishment in 2018, the union expressed its concerns regarding the unprecedented request.
