South Korea’s LIG Nex1 has set its sights on Egypt’s defense market, currently dominated by Russian and European weapon systems, by debuting at Egypt Defence Expo (EDEX) in Cairo that runs until December 7.

LIG Nex1 said on Tuesday it will showcase a range of defense systems, including the KGGB (Korean GPS-guided bomb), FA-50 AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar, and its anti-tank guided missile, AT-1K Raybolt, at the exhibition. The AT-1K Raybolt, known as Hyeon-gung in Korean, is a third-generation man-portable anti-tank guided missile developed by LIG Nex1.

It is LIG Nex1’s first time at EDEX, a biennial event recognized as Egypt’s largest international defense exhibition and around 400 defense industry companies attended 2023’s 3rd edition. According to the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT), Egypt ranks third among the world’s top arms-importing countries, with a market share of 5.7 percent from 2017 to 2021, behind India and Saudi Arabia.

Among the showcased defense systems, the ‘Hyeon-gung’ stands out as a man-portable medium-range guided weapon and as Korea’s third-generation anti-tank guided missile specifically designed to counter enemy tank threats effectively. The KGGB, developed by LIG Nex1 under the leadership of the Agency for Defense Development, can be deployed on various aircraft including the FA-50. It is equipped with a medium-range GPS guidance kit that allows for GPS disruption countermeasures.
